Before
lightning strikes - pull the plug!
It's spring storm season. Lightning strikes can
send electricity surging through computer equipment,
even if it's not turned on. A lightning pop can
cause extensive damage to your computer and can
zap a DSL modem. Don't endanger your expensive PC
or disrupt your super-speed Internet connection.
Take a low-tech approach to protecting your high-tech
equipment: pull the plug. (Please make sure that
you shut down your computer before you "pull
the plug.") Unplug your PC and modem when storms
are predicted if you won't be available to unplug
your system when a storm develops.

Stop Spam: Control
the junk that clutters your In-Box
Tired of the uninvited, odious, commercial email
that clogs up your mailbox? We
hate it, too, which is why we participate in national
efforts to stop spammers and refuse to accept
mail from recognized spammers. We turn back thousands
of messages every day, not letting them past our
servers and into your box.
But
we can't filter mail addressed specifically to
you. How do advertisers get your address? They're
crafty about getting you on their "opt-in"
mailing list. Entering a contest, subscribing
to things like news updates or weather reports
end up putting you on many email lists. Most of
us don't read the fine print when taking advantage
of these offers but nearly all of them include
adding the subscriber to marketing email lists
and these lists normally include many advertisers.
What's
the best defense? We recommend software that will
filter your incoming mail, separating the mail
you want from the mail you don't. Then you glance
at the junk, making sure there's nothing you want,
trash it and get on with the email that's important.
There are several good, inexpensive programs that
are quick and easy to download. One we recommend
is iHateSpam - not just because we love the name,
but because it's quite effective, and FREE (plus
shipping & handling) after mail-in rebate
if you get it now. Click here to get it.

Ask
the Help Desk:
Is there an easy, effective way to save web pages
directly from the Internet?
Answer: Yes. It's one of the best features of
Microsoft Internet Explorer. Just go to the File
menu, select "Save As," and look for
the line labeled "Save as type." On
this line, choose the option for "Web archive,
single file." Then, select the destination
folder, and click "Save."
This
will produce a file with the extension "mht".
Later, even if you're not connected to the Internet,
you can open these files in Internet Explorer
by double-clicking on them. You will then see
a copy of the Web page, complete with graphics.
